The concept of our project was derived from the immediate context of our site. Our site lies in the far corner of the Arnsenale, adjacent to the imposing Arsenale wall. This wall currently provides a strong boundary, with pathways either side, preventing commuters and those travelling on the interior of the Arsenale knowing of the others presence. Therefore we wanted our site to be the place where the two pathways meet. We still however wanted to preserve the element of control, so we chose to insert a pathway through the building to control the direction taken, but allowing for an open visual.
When deciding on a function for our intervention we associated the two pathways of public and private with spectator and player of sport. A sports centre in the Arsenale would also provide the perfect opportunity for local residents to congregate. Utilising the existing structure and levels we came up with a series of spaces for specific sports. An example of this can be seen in the indoor and outdoor swimming pools, which allow for use all year round and secondly provides another strong visual connection with the surrounding lagoon.
